Sick Days

Posted on 11:31 by Unknown
Colin's second Halloween has come and gone, and we're 0 for 2 when it comes to following through with Halloween plans. Last year, we had planned to trick or treat with our little tree frog, but at the last minute he got sick and we had to stay in. We ended up selling the costume on eBay since he only wore it for a few minutes.

Fast forward to Halloween this year. I dropped Colin off at daycare in his super cool Buzz Lightyear jammies, and he seemed fine. His teachers had planned a party for the kids, so I brought the Rice Krispies treats I had signed up to make. The plan was to pick him up at the end of the day, change him into his Superman costume, and take him to a local church's "trunk or treat" event for some Halloween fun.

Well, around 2:30 pm, our plans came to a halt. One of the ladies in the daycare office called me at work to tell me that Colin had started running a fever and was acting really lethargic after his nap. Shoot. I told my boss what was going on, left work, and went to pick up my little guy. I had figured it was another virus and I'd just take him home, but once I had picked him up I noticed that he was definitely acting like something was wrong. I really felt the need to have the pediatrician take a look, and thankfully, they were able to fit him in that afternoon.

Our beloved Dr. G wasn't available, so we saw an older doctor we hadn't seen before, but she was fantastic. After a quick exam, we had a diagnosis of a double ear infection and strep throat, which surprised me because I haven't known a kid this young to get it. His tonsils and uvula were swollen and there were white splotches in his throat, so the doctor felt pretty confident it was strep. She opted not to do a culture, though, because the ear infection warranted antibiotics anyway, and that would take care of the strep, too. We went straight from the doctor's office to CVS to get Colin's meds, and then headed home to spend our second Halloween in a row vegging out with a sick little boy.

But wait! That's not all. Late Thursday night, Colin gave us quite a scare when his fever spiked to 104.8. As soon as I saw the temp on the thermometer, I started to cry. I felt so panicked and helpless, and told Justin we needed to get him to the ER. Somehow Justin was incredibly cool-headed about the whole thing and told me to strip Colin down and get him into a lukewarm bath. I did, and I cried with Colin the whole time. We also gave him a dose of Tylenol and got him to drink some cold juice to try and bring the fever down some more. By the time we got to the ER, our little goofball was using every word in his vocabulary and cutting up with anyone who would glance his way. We took his temp in the bathroom of the waiting area, and it had already dropped to 102.8. Justin took one look at the crowd of people waiting to be seen and made an executive decision that we should just go home. Before we did, though, we got to see the triage nurse, who told us we can give Colin a slightly higher dose of Tylenol or Motrin than we'd been giving him because he weighs more than the average kid his age. Feeling reassured that our little stink bug was going to be ok, we headed home.

Since then, Colin's temp has been fluctuating a bit, but it has stayed below 102 all night and all day, praise the Lord! After his nearly 3 hour nap today, his temp was 98.8 and that was without meds. A little while ago, it was 100.8, so I went ahead and gave him some more Motrin just in case, but I think we're starting to see the end of the tunnel of this crappy illness.

While I hate that my little boy is sick, it's been nice to get some sweet snuggles in over the last couple days. When he's not feeling well, this boy wants his momma. And that is perfectly fine with me. :)

More to come!
